Recently, I spoke with Lela Machaidze of Clubhouse about future trends for project management. These are the notes taken from that conversation.
Lela: Over the past decade, there has been a lot happening in the profession of PM. Remote work and digital teams are the trend that will not fade. This is echoed in the PMI Pulse for the Profession 2021 report. It may not be in the same volume, but it will.
Another trend is AI. Bots will also be able to perform simple admin tasks. This is a trend we are seeing more of. This service is already offered by different organisations. It will become a more common service and will also lead to other trends, such as data analysis and making recommendations for future decisions. PMs will need to learn more soft skills.
Data science and analytics is the next topic in project management’s future. All the data that was manually collected today will be automated in future, making it more accurate. Project managers will also benefit from being able to make data-driven decisions.
There will be a variety of PM tools that can be used to manage projects, in addition to AI and automation. There are more 60 tools available to project managers to help them manage their tasks. Technology is changing rapidly. Design thinking and analytical thinking are skills that PMs need to have in order to select the right tools, applications, and tools for their organisation.
Kanban and agile will remain, but many organisations are switching to hybrid structures. Research from PMI and the Georgia Chapter show that waterfall is used in construction, but IT and financial services use agile and hybrid.

Robert @valle00r Project managers need to acquire new skills to remain relevant. This could include learning Excel and other tools such as Tableau, SQL, and Python. What role does project management play in light of the advances in data science?
Elizabeth: PWC conducted research on how AI will impact the role of PM. They discuss the following impacts: providing business insight, risk management, human capita optimisation, action taking, and active assistance.
Lela: Projects can only be done by people and not machines or apps, at least for the moment! Innovation will always be a necessity. This is a critical skill that project managers will need in future. Millennial PMs are more driven to equality so it will take a different kind of soft skill to work with millennial teams, such as building EQ and leadership. The millennial generation still needs data analysts, and the PM is the link between the team and the outside world, especially with remote teams. The domain is changing rapidly. PMs must understand that we have to adapt with the times.
Data science is also interested in change management.
Amr Alaa @amralaa99 – We are using artificial intelligence but it ultimately depends on human interaction. Satellite reports show progress, but I need to meet with the team to discuss it. We still have people who don’t know how to use computers yet so there are hurdles to overcome and training to be done. The PM cannot rely on the systems. He or she must communicate with all resources and monitor the progress.
Hooshiar Ahmadpnah @hooshiara – Will there be a need for BIM (Building Information Modelling), project management roles in future? BIM managers are between project managers and modellers.
Elizabeth: Yes. It’s a crucial skill.
Lela: BIM engineers and managers are in high demand in Georgia. This resource is highly valued. This speciality is still available. It’s a tool to create detailed design.
