Agile is a new buzzword in project management and there are many questions that ProThoughts receives about which Agile certifications we should do. I have a habitof asking these candidates why they want to pursue Agile. Most of the time, I don’t get a convincing answer. Sometimes it’s like following the crowd.
So I thought I would share some information about the Agile methodology and the Agile method of working. Also, I would add on how PMBoK 6theditionincorporates the Agile way of working – a significant addition to the 6thedition andin our PMP Success(r) Certification Program.
Decoding Agile Methodology
Agile Manifesto was typically developed for custom or be-spoke development environments where it is impossible to elicit the requirements before the start of a project. These types of projector requirements may not have been done before. These types of projects are usually done by who? Many software companies, such as Microsoft, Google, and Microsoft, do these types of projects. The stakeholders may not have a clear understanding of the requirements at the beginning, so the team develops and iterates requirements with these stakeholders until they agree to the requirements. This resulted in new terminology and new ways of doing project plans. These are called “sprints” because the team develops, tests, and passes on the requirements to the project manager.
The core concept of project management is the following: plan, execute, check that everything is going according to plan, and then close. According to a Latin word, “project” is derived from the Latin word “to plan”. Planning is important regardless of whether you work in short cycles (sprints), or long cycles.
“Officially, Agile management is more than just managing projects. The most important thing is to have a mindset that can help you manage large projects. This is more predictive and allows you to know the requirements before they are even started. ”
Agile In Waterfall Methodology:
In 2009, I wrote a technical paper about Hybrid Methodology. I had combined the Agile methodology with Waterfall methodology to create a large ERP project. The PMI selected my technical paper and invited me to speak at the National conference. In 2018, the PMBoK 6thedition suggested that Agile can be used in the waterfall (predictive) or both. I was invited to speak at the National conference for the same. The project manager can tailor the methodology to meet the needs of the project. The PMBoK 6thedition includes an addendum to Agile Manifesto by Agile Alliance.
Essential High-Level Differences between Agile (Adaptive), V/s Waterfall
I tried to sum up the key differences between Agile (Adaptive), and Waterfall ways of doing a project.
Different certifications in Agile
PMI offers a second certification, PMI-ACP. This certifies that you can only manage Agile projects. This exam is the most difficult of all the available Agile certifications. The PMI-ACP certification is, in my opinion, the most practical. Scrum Master and a new Axelos certification, Prince2 Agile(r), are also popular.
Choose a certification, whether Agile or PMP or both, which you can use in your practical workplacecurrent situation or which you can anticipate your future roles. According to the market demand, the PMP on the6thedition has become the most popular certification. It covers both Agile and waterfall.
